Automatic vs automated manual transmissions
In highway tractors, “automatic” usually means an automated manual transmission (AMT). It has a manual-style gearbox, but a computer handles the clutch and the shifts, so the driver has no clutch pedal to work in normal driving. A fully automatic transmission with a torque converter is a different design that is more often found in vocational and severe-duty trucks.
Both take the shifting off the driver. The difference matters when you compare service history and parts, so check the transmission named on each listing and ask the sales team if you are not sure which type a unit has.
Who an automatic semi truck suits
Automated transmissions are now common in highway tractors. They can make a truck easier to drive in GTA traffic and on long days, which helps newer drivers and fleets that hire drivers with different levels of experience. If you or your drivers prefer a manual, say so, and we will tell you if one comes in.
To narrow down by body type, see our used sleeper trucks for sale in Ontario and used day cabs, or compare every used Freightliner Cascadia on the lot.
What to check on a used automated transmission
On the test drive, pay attention to how smoothly the truck pulls away and shifts, both loaded and empty if you can, and whether it hunts for gears on hills. Scan for stored transmission fault codes, ask whether the clutch has been replaced or adjusted, and ask whether the transmission software is up to date.
Service records matter as much on the transmission as on the engine. Our used semi truck buying checklist covers the rest of the inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Are these true automatic transmissions?
Each listing shows the transmission exactly as it is recorded. Most automatic highway tractors use an automated manual transmission, which has no clutch pedal in normal driving. Ask the sales team if you need to confirm the type on a specific unit.
Can I drive an automatic semi truck on my licence?
Licence rules, including any restrictions for testing on an automatic, are set by each province. Check with your provincial licensing office before you buy.
Do you finance automatic transmission semi trucks?
Yes. In-house financing on approved credit covers every truck we sell, with decisions in as little as 24 hours and programs for first-time buyers and new authorities.
Why don’t you list prices online?
Every unit is listed as “Contact for price.” Call 1-905-491-1996 or use the quote form on any listing and a sales consultant will give you current pricing, along with a payment estimate if you plan to finance.
